It is simply written in the language of a system that many never sit down to learn, because learning it would mean accepting that this is home, and accepting that this is home feels, to some, like a betrayal of the home they left. So they live in the country the way a tourist lives in a hotel — using the lobby, the bed, the breakfast, and never once asking how the building is wired, who owns it, or how one might come to own a floor of it. They obey rules they never read and fear institutions they never investigated. Every encounter with the state becomes anxiety rather than navigation, because the state remains a foreign machine rather than a system whose logic can be learned and bent toward your purposes. The communities that win are relentless students of the host environment. They learn which visa converts into which status, which neighbourhood is about to be rezoned, which grant nobody is applying for, which licence the competitor failed to get. Knowledge of the terrain is the advantage. Refusing to learn the terrain — out of pride, fatigue, or a sense that it isn't truly yours — is choosing to play a game while declining to read its rules, and then calling the loss racism. Sometimes it is racism. Often, it is simply that someone else read the rulebook. <h2>The man you turned into a god</h2> And now the most delicate thing of all, the one we almost never say in public. There persists, in too many of us, an old reflex toward the White person: to mythify him. To approach him not as a peer, a counterpart, a fellow human with his own fears and incompetences and need for approval, but as something elevated — a figure to be impressed, to be liked, to be reassured. To soften ourselves in the room. To over-explain, to over-thank, to laugh a half-second too early, to seek the approval of the boss, the landlord, the official, the investor, as though their regard were a kind of permission to exist. This is the deepest residue of the colonial century, and it is the most expensive. Because business between peers is not conducted in the register of being liked. It is conducted in the register of value, leverage, and mutual interest. The person who walks into the bank wanting to be liked has already lost the negotiation. The person who walks in to assess whether this institution is useful to him — who treats the manager as a service provider to be evaluated rather than an authority to be charmed — negotiates from a different place entirely. The White man, the host-country institution, the powerful counterpart, is not a god whose favour you court. He is a human being with interests that sometimes align with yours and sometimes don't, and your job is to read which, coldly, and act accordingly. Stripping the myth away is not arrogance and it is not hostility. It is the precondition of doing business at all. You cannot trade as an equal with someone you have secretly placed above you. The mythology has to die before the partnership can begin. Let me be precise, because this is where it would be easy to be misread: this is not a call to resentment, and it is certainly not a claim that prejudice doesn't exist. It exists, and it is a real cost. The point is the opposite of grievance. The point is to refuse both postures — neither the supplicant who wants to be liked nor the victim who explains every failure by the other man's contempt. Both postures hand your agency to someone else. The peer keeps his own. <h2>What it takes to truly arrive</h2> So what does arrival actually look like? Not the visa. Not the residence card. The real arrival — the inner one. It begins with a decision that sounds simple and is not: this place is mine to understand. Not mine in the sense of belonging to a flag — mine in the sense that I will learn its rules as thoroughly as I learned the rules of the place I was born, because I intend to win here, not merely endure here. It means refusing the false choice between home and host. Honour Senegal and own where you live. Build the house in the village and the asset in the city you wake up in. Let the love flow home and let the capital, at least some of it, compound right here. It means treating the wage as a tool and ownership as the goal — and reaching back into our own traditions, the teranga, the trust networks, the trader's discipline, to pool capital and build the thing that builds the next thing. It means becoming a student of the terrain — the law, the tax, the grant, the lease, the credit — with the seriousness of a person who has decided that ignorance of the system is simply a cost he refuses to keep paying. And it means killing the myth. Walking into every room as a peer. Seeking value, not approval. Treating the powerful counterpart as exactly what he is — a human being with interests — and meeting him there, eye to eye, nit ku jëkk nit la: a person, before anything else, and so are you. The ocean is wide, and crossing it costs more than the price of the ticket. But the crossing isn't finished when the plane lands. It is finished the day you stop standing on the boat, looking back at the shore you left, and finally step onto the one beneath your feet — and begin, at last, to build.
