Wade at 100: Diomaye Président Coalition Salutes a Pillar of Senegalese Democracy
In Short

On the centenary of former president Abdoulaye Wade, the ruling coalition pays tribute to his foundational role in Senegal's democratic journey. A gesture that transcends political divides to honor history.

A century deserves to be celebrated with the memory of a people. On this 19 May, the Diomaye Président Coalition chose to mark the centenary of Maître Abdoulaye Wade with an official tribute, acknowledging in the former head of state a builder of Senegalese democracy. In a concise but significant statement, the coalition salutes 'the exceptional journey of the statesman' and 'the lasting imprint' Wade left on the country's political history. This gesture, coming from the ruling camp, goes beyond mere political courtesy. It reminds us that Senegal, despite its transitions and tensions, knows how to honor its elders. Abdoulaye Wade, the tutelary figure of Senegalese liberalism, embodied a certain idea of political struggle — that of the tribune, the unshakeable opposition leader turned president, then the contested patriarch never forgotten. The statement does not dwell on the controversies that marked the end of his reign (2000-2012). Instead, it insists on the essential: his major role in entrenching pluralism and alternation of power. A way, also, to recall that Senegalese democracy is not reduced to one man or one party, but is built generation after generation. In this year 2025, as Senegal continues its march under new leadership, this tribute resonates as an invitation to look at the road traveled. For a centenary is also a time of transmission. And to transmit is to recognize that every pillar of the Republic, even a controversial one, has its place in the national narrative.
