Sunulife exposes the brutal exploitation of Senegalese immigrants under Italy's caporalato system in Castel Volturno. Despite being the invisible backbone of the economy, they face precarity and loneliness, yet organize to preserve dignity. The piece urges us not to ignore this painful diaspora.

Sunulife describes the brutal reality of Senegalese immigrants living in Castel Volturno, an area north of Naples that mainstream tourism often overlooks. Unlike prestigious destinations such as Paris or New York, Italy is portrayed here as a place where these workers endure the caporalato system — a form of agricultural exploitation that resembles modern slavery. The author emphasizes that these individuals form the invisible backbone of the Italian economy, even as they are denied administrative recognition and lack any historical colonial ties to the country. Despite this extreme precarity and a deep structural loneliness, the community still manages to organize itself socially and religiously in order to preserve its dignity. The piece calls on us to stop turning a blind eye to this painful side of the diaspora, reminding us that the success of some should not erase the suffering of those still trapped in the fields.
