Lawyer, mathematician, professor of economics, political opponent, founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), President of the Republic—Abdoulaye Wade has held several functions and occupied various positions on the national and international stage throughout his career. Elected president in 2000, the media quickly presented him as "the most educated head of state in Africa," given his rich and impressive background. However, his academic, political, and professional journey, which is both varied and complex, leaves a gap regarding a specific and important period of his life. There is little or no information about his experience as a student at the renowned École Normale William Ponty (ENWP), as a teacher in Thiès, as a boarding school master at Lycée Van Vollenhoven (now Lycée Lamine Guèye), and as a student at the prestigious Lycée Condorcet in Paris in 1950.

This contribution, based on interviews and archival documents, seeks to shed light on a little-known chapter in the journey of this man, whose centenary Senegal and Africa are currently commemorating.

Abdoulaye Wade was born on May 29, 1926, in Kébémer, in the former district of Louga. It is in this ancient historical province of Ndiambour (kingdom of Cayor) that the future President of the Republic of Senegal took his first steps in French education before continuing his journey in Saint-Louis and then Dakar, where he obtained his elementary school certificate. It is also worth noting that in the same province of Ndiambour, on September 5, 1935, Abdou Diouf, his predecessor as head of Senegal, was born.

"Intelligent and dedicated" to his studies, Abdoulaye Wade passed the selective federal entrance exam for the William Ponty Normal School (ENWP) in Sébikotane, known as Sébiponty. This institution was the cradle of training for a multitude of Francophone African executives, some of whom later came to power as heads of state. Among its alumni are prestigious figures such as Modibo Keita, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Hubert Maga, Hamani Diori, Émile Zinsou, and himself, Abdoulaye Wade. It was in this temple of knowledge that the young student Abdoulaye Wade enrolled in the primary education section. His classmates included Senegalese Mamadou Diop, Dahomean Gouton Albert Adande, Sudanese Mory Sidibé, Mauritanian Moctar Tidiane Bâ, Guinean Birama Cissokho, and Ivorians Wadjou Koffi, Guangou René Effi, and Mori Touré. During his training at Ponty, he became enthusiastic about his general psychology courses. They would later prompt him to enroll in the General Psychology Certificate when he became a student in Besançon. Motivated and ambitious, Abdoulaye Wade passed his final exam at ENWP with the grade of "Fairly Good."

Now a supernumerary teacher in the common framework of primary education in French West Africa (AOF), the normal school graduate was assigned to the urban school of Thiès on October 30, 1947. At that time, most graduates of this institution were assigned to "bush posts" at the beginning of their careers. Thus, for the young Abdoulaye Wade, the assignment to Thiès was a relatively privileged position. Indeed, the city held a strategic position within the AOF due to its status as a major railway hub, facilitating exchanges and interactions among various populations of the federation.

Teaching a first-year elementary class (CE1) with a fairly large number of students (59), Abdoulaye Wade quickly caught the attention of his superiors. The Inspector of Education, Mr. Bernard, described him as a "beginning teacher who has goodwill and authority" over his students. Most teachers of his generation had a vocation to be teachers and to make a career of it, but Abdoulaye Wade dreamed of pursuing university studies and being among the best of his generation. Once settled in Thiès, the young teacher, driven by strong intellectual and professional ambitions, quickly turned his sights toward other horizons. His stay in this city was only a transitional step in his journey. Nourishing higher academic aspirations, he planned to leave Thiès to continue his training in secondary schools in Dakar, with the goal of obtaining his baccalaureate. "I wasn't assigned to Thiès to stay long; my ambition was to continue my studies," he recalls. Abdoulaye Wade seized the opportunity when a rectoral note from the Directorate of Education opened the way for teachers wishing to improve themselves to continue their studies. However, the beginnings of his teaching career were temporarily interrupted by his military service obligations. Abdoulaye Wade thus performed his military service in October 1948 before being discharged a year later as a second-class soldier assigned to the 7th Regiment of Senegalese Tirailleurs (RTS) in Ouakam (Dakar).

Abdoulaye Wade returned to teaching and was assigned as a boarding school master at Lycée Van Vollenhoven (now Lycée Lamine Guèye). During his professional stay at this institution, he was judged by the Academic Inspector, Mr. Fajadet, as "a conscientious, dedicated young man who gave full satisfaction." While fulfilling his duties as a boarding school master, the former "Pontin" worked to prepare for the first part of the baccalaureate, which he obtained in October 1949. Abdoulaye Wade is a student whose memory and work capacity logically prepare him for success. He won the mathematics and history prizes that same year, he specifies. His exam and competition results allowed him to obtain a scholarship from the City of Dakar in 1950 to continue his studies in France. It was in the winter of 1950 that the future President of the Republic and founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) arrived in Paris, France.

At the end of the Second World War, the development of education took place under pressure from the newly elected African representatives sitting at the Palais Bourbon (France). France strengthened its policy of granting scholarships to African students to pursue their studies in the metropole. Nearly 2,000 African or Malagasy high school and university students benefited from scholarships in the years 1949-1950 to pursue their secondary or higher education in France. The young high school student Abdoulaye Wade was part of this cohort of Senegalese who arrived in Paris in the winter of 1950 thanks to a scholarship from the municipality of Dakar, headed by Maître Lamine Guèye. He was 24 years old at the time. He already had a solid intellectual and professional culture reinforced by his time in the army. Having lived in Saint-Louis, Dakar, and Thiès, the young scholarship holder was not really disoriented when he arrived in the French capital. He quickly familiarized himself with and adapted to the rigors of metropolitan life. The Paris of that era, still bearing the scars of the German occupation, was also the privileged place for the intellectual training and politicization of colonial African elites, such as Léopold Sédar Senghor and Mamadou Dia. Abdoulaye Wade was preceded there by his elders like Cheikh Anta Diop.

He did not stay long enough to experience and participate in the political and intellectual ferment. Upon arriving in the French capital for his studies, Abdoulaye Wade intended "to become an engineer." "It was by chance that I went to high school," he says, where he finally enrolled on February 28, 1950, at Lycée Condorcet, named after the French philosopher and mathematician Nicolas Condorcet. Founded in 1803, this high school was renowned for the excellence of its education. It welcomed the brightest students from the French capital. The writer Marcel Proust, the socialist Jean Jaurès, and the philosopher Henri Bergson also completed their humanities studies there, as stated on the school's website. It was in this excellent high school, located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, that Abdoulaye Wade put his intelligence and talents to the test against other brilliant minds. It did not take long for him to distinguish himself with his mathematics teacher. "I had already passed the first part of the baccalaureate and now I had to pass the second," he recalls. At Lycée Condorcet, the student Abdoulaye Wade demonstrated promising abilities in general mathematics to his teacher, who was captivated by his answers to questions posed to the class. He remembers that after his first general mathematics class, he immediately bought, despite his modest scholarship, a mathematics book to deepen his knowledge and adapt to the high academic demands of this prestigious institution.

Thanks to his dedication, he passed the second part of the mathematics baccalaureate in June of the same year. Obtaining this diploma opened the doors to higher education. To begin his student career, Abdoulaye Wade then chose to leave the French capital to settle in Besançon, which would become his adopted city for many years. The 1950s marked the beginning of his university education and his union and political engagement for the liberation of Senegal and Africa. This new page of history took him from the blackboard to the political and union arena.

Sonko belonged, without ambiguity, to the second category. The Faye–Sonko relationship reproduced a classic Machiavellian pattern: the prince rises to power carried by a lieutenant whose popular base is larger than his own. For a time, this asymmetry is bearable — even useful. It becomes intolerable the moment the prince seeks to govern alone, to build his own political identity, to extract himself from the tutelary shadow. This is precisely the moment we have lived through since the autumn of 2025. The signals were accumulating: dismissals of Sonko's allies within the presidential apparatus, a progressive rhetorical distancing, consultations with former prime ministers and unaffiliated technocrats. Diomaye Faye was seeking to build a court that belonged to him — a court emancipated from Sonkist Pastef. But Machiavelli also warned the prince against a fatal error: believing that a vassal grown too powerful can be neutralized by a mere administrative act. Max Weber distinguished three forms of political legitimacy: legal-rational legitimacy, founded on institutions; traditional legitimacy, founded on heritage; and charismatic legitimacy, founded on the direct, almost mystical relationship between a leader and his people. This last form is the most powerful — and the only one that is strictly non-transmissible. Ousmane Sonko possesses charisma in the Weberian sense of the term. He built it in resistance, in prison, in judicial persecution, in rallies where his mere presence was enough to transform a crowd into a people. This charisma was not constituted in palaces; it was constituted in the street, in shared suffering, in the collective sense of a community of destiny. Diomaye Faye, for his part, came to power through the delegation of that charisma. The Senegalese people voted for him because Sonko had told them to — because "Diomaye moy Sonko." That delegation is a considerable political resource upon taking office. It becomes a structural handicap the moment one tries to break free of it. For the people have not forgotten. And the people know how to tell the difference between the one who was designated for them and the one who conquered them. Diomaye Faye can govern. He can even govern well. But he cannot inherit the charismatic bond between Sonko and the Senegalese people. That bond is personal, inalienable, and it survives every decree. <blockquote>"Charisma cannot be decreed. It is won in resistance, or it is not won at all."</blockquote> <h2>What History Will Remember</h2> I am not a judge of men. I am an observer of dynamics. And what I observe tonight is a pivotal moment in Senegal's post-independence political history. For the first time since Léopold Sédar Senghor, a Senegalese political leader possesses a popular anchoring that transcends parties, regions, and generations. That anchoring was not given to him by an election; it was granted to him by a people who suffered with him, who believed in him when the entire system sought to crush him. The decree of May 22, 2026 does not change this reality. It radicalizes it. For in the collective memory of peoples, nothing consolidates a leader's stature more than the injustice he endures. Mandela emerging from Robben Island. Lula emerging from prison to win the Brazilian presidency. History has its laws, and they cannot be negotiated by decree. Bassirou Diomaye Faye has exercised his constitutional right. No one disputes this. But he will henceforth have to govern without the support of the man who lent him his legitimacy, and before a people who, for their part, did not sign this divorce. They die — or are reborn — in the judgment of the people."</blockquote> <h2>The Return of the Repressed — An Unexpected Epilogue</h2> This article was written. It was about to be published. And then history, with its sovereign irony, decided to write its own ending. In the hours that followed the dismissal decree, El Malick Ndiaye, President of the National Assembly and a man of the same camp, resigned from his post. Ousmane Sonko returned to his seat as a deputy in the National Assembly to be elected, in the same breath, President of the National Assembly of Senegal. Let us pause a moment to measure what this means — constitutionally, politically, symbolically. Constitutionally: the President of the National Assembly is, under Senegalese law, the second-ranking figure of the State. In the event of a vacancy in the presidency, it is he who assumes the interim. Diomaye Faye dismissed his Prime Minister in the morning. By evening, that same man had become his designated constitutional successor. Politically: Sonko no longer governs from the Prime Minister's Office — he now controls the legislative power. He can summon the government, steer budget debates, weigh on every appointment, every law, every reform. The dismissal, meant to remove him from the game, has placed him back at the heart of the chessboard, on a square that Diomaye Faye cannot take away from him by decree.Symbolically: it is the return of the repressed in the most literal sense. Political psychoanalysis teaches us that what one seeks to suppress by force always returns — often in a more powerful form, more legitimate, harder to contain. Freud called this the return of the repressed. Machiavelli would simply have called it a miscalculation. El Malick Ndiaye resigned from the presidency of the National Assembly. This gesture, discreet in appearance, is in reality a political act of rare elegance — the act of a man who chooses his camp at the moment when choosing costs something. He deserves to be saluted. As for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, he finds himself in the most uncomfortable situation a head of state can experience: governing under the institutional gaze of the very man he sought to be rid of. Each Council of Ministers, each address to the nation, each act of government will henceforth unfold under the eye of the President of the National Assembly — an eye that knows every file, every promise, every renunciation. Greek tragedy had a name for this situation: Nemesis. The immanent justice that catches up with the one who believed he could free himself from the order of things.The institutional parricide has been accomplished. But the father, for his part, presides over the National Assembly. <h2>"You think you have killed the lion. You have only offered him a gilded cage from which he watches — and waits."</h2>

The Killing of the Father: Sonko vs. Diomaye

The calendar's coincidence carries the weight of a symbol. On May 14, 2026, Ousmane Sonko published Continuer Fanon, a short book drawn from a speech delivered in 2025, released in a trilingual English-French-Wolof edition by Déberlinisation Lab. Eight days later, he was dismissed from the office of Prime Minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Then elected President of the National Assembly. Jules Crétois, writing in Le Monde, reads this political text as an ideological roadmap for what comes next. The book opens on a central question: "How do we finish what Frantz Fanon began?" By claiming the legacy of the Martinican anticolonial thinker, Sonko intends to recall the radical core of his thought at a moment when his opposition to the president turned precisely on the scope of compromises acceptable in the exercise of power. <h2>A Break with Liberalism</h2> This text marks a shift in Sonko's intellectual trajectory. Where his 2018 bestseller Solutions. Pour un Sénégal nouveau adopted a technical approach and seemed open to economic liberalism, Continuer Fanon takes up a resolutely revolutionary language. He revisits Fanon's theses on the "parasitic" character of the bourgeoisies of decolonized nations and denounces the "colonial economic model" in which Senegal remains, he argues, trapped. Without naming the IMF, he denounces the "external pressures, the injunctions," affirming that Senegal "will not be governed from the outside." The question of the CFA franc is also raised. That sentence is the entire psychological story of the rupture compressed into eleven words. The man who was just fired from the second-highest office in West Africa's most-watched democracy did not sound diminished. He sounded freed. And that is because, on a behavioral level, Ousmane Sonko was never built to be anyone's second-in-command — not Diomaye Faye's, not history's, not anyone's. He is a high-DI personality, and the entire architecture of his partnership with Faye was a category error: an attempt to fit a Dominant-Influencer into a constitutional role designed for a Conscientious-Steady operator.

This is not a political analysis dressed up in psychological language. It is the other way around. The political crisis in Dakar is the visible surface of a behavioral mismatch so fundamental that it could only ever resolve in one of two ways: Faye dismisses Sonko, or Sonko effectively dismisses the presidency. The first option played out on Friday. The second was the version Sonko's loyalists had been preparing for.

To understand why this had to happen, you have to understand what a DI profile actually is — and what it cannot, by its own internal logic, ever become.

<h2>Decoding the DI: The Wiring Beneath the Politician</h2>
The DISC behavioral framework, derived from the work of psychologist William Marston in the 1920s, identifies four primary behavioral drives: Dominance (results, control, challenge), Influence (persuasion, recognition, social energy), Steadiness (loyalty, patience, cooperation), and Conscientiousness (precision, structure, caution).

Most political operators sit somewhere between two of these poles. A career civil servant tends to lean CS — careful and steady, the kind of person who reads memos line by line and respects institutional rhythm. A diplomat usually trends IS — warm, conciliatory, fluent in the texture of relationships. A judge or technocrat skews CD — exacting, sober, intolerant of theatre.

A DI profile is something altogether different. It is the architecture of the disruptor, the founder, the movement-builder, the insurgent who turns a grievance into a wave. The D drives them toward direct action and uncontested control; the I drives them toward audience, narrative, and the validation of crowds. Together, these two forces produce a personality with a very specific set of non-negotiables:

Autonomy is oxygen. A DI does not "report to" anyone in any meaningful psychological sense. Hierarchical position can be accepted on paper, but it will be subverted in practice the moment it constrains action.
Speed is identity. Deliberation feels like decay. The DI experiences slow institutional process not as prudence but as cowardice or sabotage.
Conflict is energizing, not draining. Where SC profiles seek harmony and avoid friction, the DI metabolizes confrontation. Public clashes do not exhaust them; they re-charge them.
The crowd is the courtroom. Decisions are validated externally, in front of an audience, not internally through reflection or laterally through consensus.
Loyalty flows downward, not upward. A DI will demand intense loyalty from followers but feels constitutionally unable to render that same loyalty to a superior, especially one they perceive as their own creation.

Read Sonko's behavior over the last two years through that grid and there is not a single anomaly. There is only the predictable, almost mechanical, expression of a behavioral profile doing what such profiles always do when placed in a subordinate frame.

<h2>The Founder's Wound: When You Anoint Your Own Successor</h2>
The single most important fact in this drama is also the most psychologically combustible: Sonko chose Faye.

When the Constitutional Court blocked Sonko from the 2024 ballot on the basis of his defamation conviction, he did not retreat. He reached down and elevated a relatively unknown ally — Bassirou Diomaye Faye — and handed him the keys to the movement Sonko himself had built brick by brick. The campaign slogan that crystallized that moment was "Diomaye mooy Sonko" — Diomaye is Sonko. Three words that won an election and three words that doomed the partnership.

In behavioral terms, what Sonko did was take a CD-leaning understudy (Faye is the technocrat: calm, measured, institutionally minded) and install him in the presidency as a kind of constitutional placeholder. This is a maneuver a DI can pull off precisely because of the I drive — the ability to project belief onto a crowd until the crowd believes it back. But it sets a psychological trap that is almost impossible to escape.

The trap is this: a DI founder who anoints a successor cannot subsequently subordinate himself to that successor without experiencing it as a violation of natural order. The hierarchy in Sonko's mind never inverted. Faye was, and remained, the person Sonko placed. The constitution says one thing; the founder's psychology says another; and the founder's psychology — being a lived, daily, embodied reality — wins every internal argument.

This is the same dynamic that has destroyed founder-CEO transitions in corporate life for a century. The founder steps back, brings in a "professional manager," and then spends the next eighteen months publicly undermining that manager because the manager keeps having the audacity to actually manage. The constitutional architecture of Senegal's strong presidency simply turned this familiar pattern into a national crisis instead of a boardroom one.

When Sonko reportedly told lawmakers, "I don't work for Bassirou Diomaye Faye, I work for Senegal," he was not making a rhetorical point. He was making a literal psychological declaration. The DI cannot work for a successor it installed. The vocabulary of subordination does not exist in that wiring.

<h2>Public Defiance as Identity, Not Tactic</h2>
One of the most consistent misreadings of Sonko in the past year has been the framing of his public criticisms of Faye as strategy — as if a more disciplined version of Sonko could have kept those disagreements behind closed doors. This misreads the man. For a DI, public expression is not a tactical choice; it is the native mode of operation.

The S and C profiles process disagreement internally and resolve it laterally — a quiet conversation, a memo, a private word. The DI processes disagreement in front of an audience, because the audience is the regulating mechanism. The crowd is where reality is tested, validated, and made real. To ask a high-I personality to swallow a disagreement and address it privately is to ask them to operate in a sensory-deprived environment. They can do it briefly. They cannot do it for long.

This explains the pattern that observers found so puzzling: Faye and Sonko would reportedly hold cordial private meetings, and then within forty-eight hours Sonko would be at a Pastef party gathering, or in front of parliament, openly accusing the president of weakness, of insufficient authority, of being unable to back his prime minister. Outside observers saw this as bad faith. It was not bad faith. It was the I drive doing what the I drive does — taking any unresolved internal pressure and venting it into the largest available room.

The accusation Sonko leveled most often — that Faye showed "a lack of authority" — is itself diagnostically revealing. It is precisely the criticism a high-D person makes of a high-C person, regardless of facts. To the D mindset, deliberation reads as hesitation, consultation reads as weakness, and institutional caution reads as cowardice. Faye was doing exactly what a Senegalese president should be doing in the middle of a 132%-of-GDP debt crisis and a frozen $1.8 billion IMF programme: moving carefully, preserving credibility, calibrating each public statement. To Sonko, every calibration looked like surrender.

<h2>The Pace Asymmetry: When Urgency Becomes Ideology</h2>

Beneath the personality clash sat a deeper disagreement about time itself.

Sonko's policy instincts — immediate renegotiation of oil, gas, and mining contracts; refusal of standard IMF conditionalities; rapid restructuring of the post-colonial economic settlement — are not just left-populist preferences. They are the ideological expression of a behavioral metabolism that experiences institutional time as theft.

For a DI, the question is never "what is the optimal pace?" The question is always "why are we not doing this now?" Patience reads as complicity. Phased implementation reads as betrayal. The very concept of "managed transition" is a category that does not parse cleanly inside a DI nervous system.
