This reality brings us back to a broader reflection I have often developed regarding the functioning of our African democracies. For several years, I have distinguished between procedural democracy and substantive democracy.

Procedural democracy consists of reproducing the outward forms of democracy. Elections are held, procedures are followed, institutional appearances are maintained. But the real mechanisms of power remain largely unchanged.

Substantive democracy, on the other hand, aims at the effective transformation of society. It is less concerned with appearances than with results. It seeks to know whether institutions truly allow for the promotion of merit, equal opportunity, inclusion, freedom, and human progress.

Now, what appears in this national team closely resembles a form of formal football. The symbols of renewal are displayed. Youth is talked about. The next generation is evoked. But in reality, the power structures remain largely unchanged.

Status continues to prevail over performance. Hierarchy continues to prevail over effectiveness. Reproduction continues to prevail over renewal. This contradiction is not limited to football.

It runs through many Senegalese institutions today. It also runs through a significant part of contemporary African political debate.

Because the regression we are witnessing is not only Senegalese. It is global. Everywhere, ideas of progress are retreating. Everywhere, conservative forces are regaining the initiative.

In the United States and Europe, in Russia and India, in Turkey and several African countries, we observe the return of phenomena we thought had been durably weakened.

Ultranationalism is on the rise. Religion is reoccupying spaces that previously belonged to rational and democratic debate. Women's rights are being questioned. Minorities become scapegoats. Science is challenged. Facts lose their importance in the face of emotions. The reality of facts becomes relative. Lies become a banal tool of political communication. Authority gradually prevails over freedom.

This evolution constitutes one of the great intellectual tragedies of our time. It also affects a part of African sovereigntist discourse.

What is most worrying is not even this regression in itself. All societies experience moments of doubt. The most worrying is the growing inability of a part of the intellectual, political, religious, and media elites to name it clearly. Too often, conformism prevails over intellectual courage. Too often, the spirit of the times is confused with the meaning of history.

Let us be clear: the aspiration for greater sovereignty is perfectly legitimate. It is necessary. Africa needs political, economic, monetary, cultural, and intellectual sovereignty.

But we must distinguish between two radically different forms of sovereigntism.

Progressive sovereigntism seeks to strengthen the ability of peoples to control their destiny while deepening freedoms, human rights, gender equality, scientific knowledge, social justice, and citizen participation.

Reactionary sovereigntism pursues a completely different goal. It invokes sovereignty to justify the retreat of freedoms. It mobilizes identity against universalism. It instrumentalizes religion. It celebrates authority rather than emancipation. It effectively protects existing hierarchies. It sometimes transforms the nation into a pretext for limiting fundamental rights.

From Washington to Moscow, from Budapest to New Delhi, nationalist and reactionary movements also invoke sovereignty. Sovereignty is therefore not, in itself, a political project. Everything depends on what it seeks to protect and what it seeks to build.

A society that believes women's place should be reduced is not progressive. A society that subordinates citizenship to religion is not progressive. A society that supports the death penalty is not progressive. A society that considers human rights as secondary is not progressive. A society that despises science is not progressive. A society that refuses generational renewal is not progressive.

And no invocation of sovereignty can change this reality.

The fundamental question is therefore: do we want a sovereignty of emancipation or a sovereignty of regression? This question also helps us better understand the migratory phenomenon.

Young Senegalese do not leave their country only for economic reasons. They also leave because they are seeking oxygen.

They sometimes flee societies where innovation is suspect, where hierarchies are rigid, where obedience is valued more than creativity, where elders hold decision-making spaces for a long time without always preparing their succession. They seek societies where merit carries more weight than status.

Senegalese football sometimes offers a striking metaphor for this reality.

Talented young players wait on the bench while the needs of the field demand their entry. The implicit message is always the same: your time will come later. But history does not work that way.

Societies that advance are those that know how to trust their new generations when they are ready, not when an aging hierarchy finally agrees to give them a place.

Ultimately, Senegal's double defeat in this World Cup may not be just a sporting defeat. It brings us back to a much deeper question.

Are we still capable of building a society based on competence rather than status, on truth rather than narratives, on science rather than dogmas, on emancipation rather than submission, on renewal rather than reproduction?

The answer to this question will likely determine Senegal's future more than the result of a football match.

Because the nations that progress are those that know how to renew their elites, trust their youth, and anchor their sovereignty in a project of human emancipation. All others always end up losing, on the field and in history.

And now, in a burst of supreme enlightenment, a journalism student—a potential pillar of information (tremble, newsrooms!)—enlightens us about the true threat weighing on our dear nation: a minister's hairstyle.

Yes, you read that right. Mrs. Djirèye Clotilde Coly, Minister of Youth and Sports, is now a "cultural dissident" because her hair does not match the fantasized image that some have of "the Senegalese who represents." We would be bordering on genius, wouldn't we? Alas no, just sheer delusion! It seems that our country's sovereignty hangs by a hair—and more precisely, by its length. A revelation that will surely go down in the annals of social cohesion and hair fashion.

What irony to see an apprentice journalist, supposed to be a bulwark against disinformation and a guarantor of in-depth analysis, transform into a "hair brigadier."

But let us be serious, if one can be in the face of such a farce. Senegal, this land of teranga, of ethnic and cultural diversity, where Wolofs, Fulani, Serers, Jolas, Mandingos, Bassaris, Bediks, and so many others coexist and enrich a unique social fabric—would it suddenly be reduced to a hair uniform? Ignoring the richness of our traditions, where short hair can have deep and respectable meanings in certain communities, is sheer ignorance, a deplorable intellectual laziness. An insult to our cultural heritage.

Sovereignty, my dear censors, is not measured by a woman's haircut, but by a nation's ability to embrace its real cultural plurality, to defend its values of tolerance and respect. Sovereignty is cultural, economic, political, and structural.

It is the battle for respect for our specificities and respective cultural identities: food sovereignty (no longer depending on rice imports), energy sovereignty, protection of the private sector against global giants, and control over the means of our development.

And what about the dress code injunction? In a secular country, wanting to impose a "look" on other citizens and on a minister is not only absurd but dangerous. It is the start of a slippery slope toward intolerance and sectarianism. Democracy, secularism, and the rule of law—these concepts so often mistreated—guarantee precisely that we do not meddle in our fellow citizens' personal choices, as long as they respect the law. And to my knowledge, having short hair is not yet a crime against the nation, nor any offense to others.

This debate—grotesque and deplorable—distracts from the real issues.

While people squabble over a hairstyle, Minister Coly has far more crucial missions than satisfying the aesthetic whims of a handful of grumpy minds. Judging a woman by her appearance rather than her abilities and skills is the height of institutional sexism and body shaming—practices we thought were outdated but, alas, seem to die hard.

So, to those who worry about the "cultural dissidence" of the Minister, I suggest a rereading of the fundamentals: Senegal's history, its diversity, its secularism. And perhaps just a little common sense. For true sovereignty—the one that matters—is that of the mind, free and enlightened, capable of distinguishing the essential from the trivial, substance from form. And certainly not the one that gets lost in the intricacies of a hairstyle and appearances.

Madame Minister, you have my full support; Senegal awaits your results on the ground, not your explanations before the tribunal of appearance run by apprentice journalists hungry for visibility and chasing sensationalism.

Armchair Sovereignty and Look Police: When Ignorance Poses as Patriotism

An ideology is something other than a project or an opinion. It is the operation by which power converts its constraint into consent, and its most accomplished form is not the grand narrative that flaunts itself, but the naked fact that believes itself innocent. It is this form we must examine, because it has erased its own traces, and one never distrusts what does not resemble an idea. <h2>Ideology as project, ideology as evidence</h2> Let us start from the beginning. In the first sense, ideology founds a social project. It orders values, sets a goal, gathers forces around a vision. Socialism and liberalism have never been pure beliefs; they claim to command collective life and to found the institutions that sustain it. They are enunciated, programmed, defended in public. One can fight them because one can name them. In the second sense, ideology dissolves into common sense. It becomes spontaneous evidence, the "everyone knows that…" that manufactures the certainties of the day. Saying that "the market regulates itself" or that "the state is inherently inefficient" is to inhabit this register: dominant opinions that guide conduct without ever constituting a program. This one is fought differently, because it does not present itself as an adversary. It presents itself as reality. Whatever its form, ideology fulfills the same function: making order acceptable to those who endure it. No society is built in a void. Every institution rises on a narrative that confers upon it the right to exist, and history shows this through its ruptures more than its durations. The Soviet Union did not collapse in 1991 under the blows of an enemy army. It fell the day when no one inside any longer believed in the narrative that sustained it. An army holds a territory; it does not hold a belief. Legitimacy is not an ornament of power. It is its condition of possibility. This same legitimation that unites can also anesthetize, and here the two registers cease to be equivalent. An ideology-project promises and exposes itself to judgment. An ideology-opinion dispenses with promising, since it has already made order familiar. The African Continental Free Trade Area, whose trade was launched in 2021 under the auspices of the African Union, was an explicit project: a treaty, protocols, a timeline, an assumed vision of the continent's integration through a single market. One can discuss the terms because they are written. But the idea that this market would, by itself, be profitable for African economies belongs to an entirely different register. That one never had to justify itself, because it was taken for granted. The treaty exposes itself to debate. The belief that carries it evades it. Power always prefers the latter, because one does not demand accountability from what never formulated a promise. This is why the decisive question is not that of the grand displayed systems, but that of mute evidence. How is it so well adjusted? <h2>Three ways to rid oneself of evidence</h2> Bachelard settled it first, in 1938, in The Formation of the Scientific Mind: opinion thinks poorly, it does not think, it translates needs into knowledge. The first obstacle to knowledge is not ignorance, which can be instructed, but already formed opinion, which resists because it takes itself for an acquisition. Primary experience, that which strikes the senses before any method, is too clear to be true. It satisfies before having demonstrated anything, and it is precisely this satisfaction that closes the mind. One never knows on virgin ground. One knows against prior knowledge, against oneself. The real is not given; it is wrested away. Where the empiricist sees a starting point, Bachelard sees a point to destroy. Durkheim had drawn up the same indictment as early as 1895, in The Rules of Sociological Method. He demanded that we set aside preconceptions, those ideas that everyday language deposits in us before any examination. He who studies the state starting from the idea that everyone has of it does not study society: he describes his own prejudices with diligence, and believes he is doing science when he is merely reflecting. Treating social facts as things was first of all refusing to receive them as ordinary consciousness delivers them. Common sense opens no door to reality. It is the screen that interposes itself, all the more opaque for presenting itself as transparent. The sociologist who does not break with it merely lends scholarly authority to the prejudices of his time. What remains is what neither of them pushes to its conclusion, and which Marx alone names. His answer is no longer methodological; it is political. In The German Ideology, written in 1845 and kept in the shadows until its publication in 1932, he describes ideology as a camera obscura where men and their relations appear upside down. The image matters: what is inverted is not a lie that someone invented; it is the world itself as it is reflected when one forgets where the light comes from. Common sense is a sediment of history. What one takes for the voice of things is only the hardened trace of a power relation. The ideas of an era are those of its ruling class, become so familiar that one stops recognizing a hand in them. The empiricist who looks at facts without theory does not look at the world. He looks at a world already ordered by others, and he calls objectivity the fact of not seeing who ordered it. <h2>Those who believe they have no ideology</h2> I will be blunt here, because the consequence is weighty and too often avoided. Claiming to stick to facts and distrusting any theory in the name of common sense is, without knowing it, adopting the theory of those who shaped the facts. The displayed rejection of ideology is still an ideological position, and the most effective one, since it has erased its own traces. The loop then closes on itself: empiricist evidence is precisely that ideology-opinion which legitimizes order without ever having to defend it, because it has pulled off the feat of not presenting itself as an idea. The trap applies to all camps, and that is what makes it formidable. The sovereignist discourse that brandishes dependency figures and the liberal discourse that aligns growth curves use the same gesture. Each produces its naked fact, places it on the table, and demands that the adversary bow before reality. Neither says that the reality it displays has been cut up before being shown. Sovereignty claimed as absolute and integration claimed as natural are two opinions that have ceased to know themselves as such. There are only relative sovereignties, because there are only situated facts. <h2>When numbers do politics</h2> One recognizes this trap by a constant sign in African public debate: the invocation of numbers as neutral arbiters. "The data speak for themselves," one hears, whereas no data has ever spoken. One makes it speak. The choice of indicator is already a political decision dressed as a finding, as is the choice of the reference year. The growth rate that delights a ministry and the precariousness that is not visible in it measure the same country and tell two different worlds. Change the deflator, shift the base of comparison, and triumph turns into stagnation without a single fact having moved. Tribune empiricism does not resolve this conflict. It conceals one of its terms, and presents the half it has retained as the entirety of reality. Empiricism flatters because it promises certainty without effort and truth without rupture. Yet no perception is immaculate. Every fact is already interpreted when it reaches us; the only thing that varies is whether we know by whom. A thought that ratifies evidence prolongs the established order under the guise of neutrality. A thought that breaks with it barely begins to be a thought. Between the two, there is not a degree of rigor; there is a decision about which side one serves. Evidence is not the beginning of knowledge. It is its first adversary. An order does not die the day one stops obeying it, but the day one stops believing in the evidence that sustained it.

The Ideology of Those Who Have None

I take up my pen again today with a strange feeling. A mix of déjà vu and vertigo. As if history were repeating itself, but we still refuse to recognize it. In 2012, Senegal breathed. I remember the streets, the cries, the hopes. I remember that youth who refused, who contested, who dreamed. I remember that promise. A simple promise: never again. In 2021, I wrote an open letter to President Macky Sall. The words burned my fingers. I reminded him that he was president in part thanks to the commitment of Y en a Marre, thanks to the young Senegalese men and women who had taken to the streets to say stop and that some of them had died so that he could accede to the highest office. I reminded him that Jeune Afrique headlined on June 24, 2011: “Senegal: the riots in Dakar left 102 injured, including 13 police officers” and on February 3, 2012: “Senegal: Podor mourns its dead after the repression of an M23 demonstration.” I told him: “Today, you are following in the footsteps of your predecessor.” I thought I was writing about the end of a cycle. I had not yet understood that I was writing about a mechanism. Today, a new alternation has taken place. A new promise. A new breath. And yet. <h2>The Illusion of Rupture</h2> Each alternation in Senegal has been built on a rupture. Wade against Diouf. Macky against Wade. Sonko-Diomaye against Macky. Each time, the same scenario: a mobilized youth, accumulated injustices, legitimate anger, a promise of profound transformation. Each time, after coming to power: a recomposition of alliances, an internal struggle for legitimacy, a tension between governing and lasting. Fadel Barro, coordinator of the Y en a Marre movement, put it this way in 2012: “At the time, life in Senegal was punctuated by untimely power cuts, financial scandals worth billions, extraordinary social injustice, the arrogance of the regime... There was almost no one to echo our frustrations.” If today there has been progress on some of these ills, Fadel Barro's words still resonate. What we call “betrayal” is often in reality a collision: between the ideal of rupture and the reality of power. Between the one we promised to be and the one the system ends up making of us if we are not careful. Today, the debates are loud. Who said what? Who supports whom? Who is loyal? Who is a traitor? But all of this is the surface. In my writings, I have often spoken of the iceberg effect: that immense space between what we perceive at first glance and the deep reality it contains. Complex thought would offer us the possibility of considering the multidimensional nature of what we experience. It moves away from binary and linear thought where a thing can only have one character at a time: black or white, good or bad, strong or weak. It allows us to look at a system from several angles and consider all the interactions taking place within it with their nuances and subtleties. Beneath the surface of this crisis between Diomaye and Sonko, there are: inherited systems, normalized violence, deeply rooted structures of inequality. Abdoulaye Ba, a student at UCAD, died after violent clashes between students and law enforcement on campus. This is not an isolated event. It is the sign of a state that, for decades, has responded to student protest with force, regardless of the government in power. Women are killed by their partners and girls and adolescents are victims of rape. Every week. In almost general indifference. This is not a news item. It is a system that, for decades, has normalized violence against women, and this so-called rupture government crystallized it from the start, by appointing only four women ministers out of thirty-three members of government. One tenth. As if “serving the people” could be done without half of those people at the table. A law criminalizes identities. This is not a one-off decision. It is an ideology of control over bodies and beings. Dakar is suffocating. Trees are disappearing from our streets. The ocean is slowly dying. The Parc de Hann, which I knew as a child as a living space, has become the symbol of a relationship with the living that is deeply damaged. The animals there are ghosts. This is not an oversight. It is the reflection of a civilization that has lost the sense of care, care for oneself, care for others, care for the living. And the youth. Always the youth. Without jobs. Without prospects. Without trust. These same young people who were gassed, arrested, imprisoned, killed so that a so-called rupture government could come to power, and who today watch this same government tear itself apart over questions of political positioning while their lives remain suspended in the wait for a future that does not come. <h2>Intersectionality: Multiple Oppressions, One Same Logic</h2> Kimberlé Crenshaw, who highlighted both Critical Race Theory and the concept of intersectionality, a way of understanding how forms of oppression are not separate. They intersect. What we are experiencing is not a series of distinct problems. Misogyny, homophobia, police violence, economic injustice, environmental degradation, contempt for non-human life: these are manifestations of the same logic: a logic of domination, control, and dehumanization. As I wrote two years ago about this government: “The issue is not 'giving positions to women' but understanding that no systemic change can be achieved sustainably without inclusive and equitable governance.” This remains true today. And it goes far beyond gender, as demonstrated by the work of Otto Scharmer, through Theory U, which invites us to go beyond surface reactions to descend to the root of our systems, where the invisible patterns that shape our actions and institutions are lodged. Otto Scharmer speaks of three major fractures: Us and the Other: the social divide. Us and nature: the destruction of the living. Us and ourselves: the inner disconnection. Let's look at Senegal today with this grid. Us and the Other. Polarization is extreme. Debate has become confrontation. Loyalty has become more important than truth. Supporters insulting each other instead of talking. A political class that uses the rhetoric of rupture to justify behaviors identical to those it condemned yesterday. Us and nature. Natural spaces sacrificed on the altar of soulless urbanization: all of this is not separate from the violence we do to each other. One cannot treat human beings with dignity in an environment one destroys. Us and ourselves. This is perhaps the deepest and least discussed fracture. Leaders disconnected from their own humanity. Exhausted, disillusioned citizens. A society that can no longer hold complexity. That prefers the camp to nuance. That confuses loyalty to the leader with loyalty to the people. The people, in all this? We often forget the essential. It is not only political alliances that break. It is hopes. When a coalition fractures, it is citizens who lose their faith, their patience, their ability to believe. It is mothers who sent their sons to protest and are still waiting for it to serve a purpose. It is young people who have been blinded, imprisoned, who have seen their loved ones die and who now watch the beneficiaries of their sacrifices fight over positions. As I learned in my own journey, in this research I conducted on the meaning of home and on the violence that runs through our lives: hurt people hurt people. This implies that a wounded society ends up reproducing the violence it suffers. A youth to whom no reasons to hope have been given ends up ceasing to hope or finding their reasons elsewhere, sometimes in dangerous directions. The most worrying thing is not that leaders change. It is that the dynamics remain the same. I wrote in 2016 in the collective work "Politisez-vous": “We criticize less Politics than what it has become.” Today, I would say: we do not change Politics. We change the faces that reproduce it. Yet, I continue to believe, as I have written, as I have experienced in my own journey, that Politics remains the solution. Not that politics. Not a politics of conquest, survival, domination. But a politics that begins elsewhere. That begins within. There is a question I have asked myself for a long time, since my brother once told me: “For someone who is at war with herself, it's interesting to see you talk about building peace.” These words shared at a time when I was living a gap between apparent success and internal conflicts struck me like an arrow. They taught me something essential: you cannot create peace on the outside without addressing the war within. I wonder what it would be like if our leaders had access to that space. Not just political advisors. Not just strategists. But coaches. Spaces of truth. Serious inner work on their relationship to power, identity, privilege, fear. What I see, when I look at the history of Wade, Macky, and now Diomaye and Sonko, is what I saw in myself: patterns that repeat because they were never made conscious. Wounds that govern instead of vision. Fears that take control instead of values. Governing is not only learned in institutions. It is also learned through introspection. Perhaps the most necessary rupture, the one no one dares to name, is the rupture with oneself. I will end this letter not with certainties, but with questions. Questions for our leaders. For us. For this country we love, we mourn, we never stop wanting to see fulfilled. <h2>How could we …</h2> … support our leaders in doing deep work on themselves, on their relationship to power, ego, fear of disappearing? … create spaces of truth where power can be questioned without violence? … move from a logic of domination over women, minorities, nature, the adversary to a logic of service? … hold collective complexity without falling into simplification and polarization, without making the adversary an enemy, without reducing truth to a camp? … govern while remaining deeply human, remembering that those we govern are hungry, afraid, need to be seen and heard? … build a society where the death of Abdoulaye Ba at UCAD and many others before him is a lasting national outrage, not a quickly forgotten news item? … build a country where women are not silently murdered by their partners, where girls have access to education without obstacles, where children no longer beg in the streets, where the intersectionality of oppressions is finally named for what it is, not an imported trend but a Senegalese reality? … create a Senegal where trees breathe, where parks are worthy of the name, where our oceans are protected, where respect for the living is a political act, because the relationship to nature says something about our relationship to ourselves? Above all: how can we collectively reinvent what it means to serve? The problem of our generation has never been solely Abdoulaye Wade. Nor Macky Sall. Nor Sonko. Nor Diomaye. The problem is deeper. The solution too. As I wrote in 2016: “No battle was ever won in advance. You have to be on the battlefield to fight.” That battlefield today is that of our own consciousness. Of our own rediscovered humanity. Let us weave, dear friends. Let us weave. If we do not weave our blanket today, when night falls, and it is already falling on too many Senegalese families, we may never emerge unscathed. In tribute to Uncle Mansour Diack. The Two Alternations: What We Refuse to See

There is a photograph that will haunt Senegalese political memory for a generation: two men on a campaign poster, side by side, one slogan beneath them — Diomaye moy Sonko. Diomaye is Sonko. Not "Diomaye, endorsed by Sonko." Not "Diomaye, ally of Sonko." An equation. A fusion of identities so complete that the people were asked to vote for one man as the vessel of another. On May 22, 2026, that equation was dissolved by decree. The man who could not run gave his movement, his charisma, and his electorate to the man who could. The man who received them, once installed in the Palace, eventually concluded that he could no longer govern in his benefactor's shadow. Within days, Sonko was out of the Primature, PASTEF was out of government, and the two architects of Senegal's democratic rupture of 2024 were giving dueling versions of their divorce — one through a presidential decree, the other through a press conference in which Sonko refused to dress the separation in diplomatic language. I am not interested, here, in adjudicating who was right. I wrote elsewhere about the political mechanics of this rupture — the parricide, the inheritance of charisma, the logic of the Prince. This essay asks a different question, one that concerns not presidents but all of us: Why does betrayal so often come from the people closest to us — and what should an ordinary human being do with that knowledge?<h2> </h2><h2>The Old Law</h2> Four centuries before Robert Greene wrote The 48 Laws of Power, the courts of Europe, the empires of the Sahel, and the royal houses of Asia already knew his second law by heart. Greene merely gave it a modern formulation: never put too much trust in friends; learn how to use enemies. His reasoning, compressed, runs like this. Friends are dangerous precisely because of the warmth that surrounds them. We recruit them out of loyalty rather than competence. We assume their goodwill instead of verifying it. And — this is the law's sharpest edge — a friend who owes you everything is not, psychologically, a grateful subordinate. He is a man carrying a debt he can never repay, and unpayable debts curdle. The favor you did him becomes the thing he must escape to feel like his own man. An enemy, by contrast, has something to prove. His incentives are visible. You watch him; you never relax around him; and paradoxically, that vigilance makes him safer than the friend you stopped watching years ago. Read against Dakar in May 2026, the law is almost unbearably precise. Sonko did not merely help Diomaye Faye. He made him — selected him from within PASTEF, transferred to him an electorate built through years of prison, persecution, and street resistance, and handed him 54 percent of the vote ten days after both men walked out of jail. No politician in modern African history has received a larger gift. And it is exactly the size of the gift that made the rupture predictable. A small favor creates gratitude. A total favor creates a problem of identity. Every decision Faye made as president was read — by the press, by PASTEF militants, by Sonko himself — through the question: is this Diomaye, or is this Sonko governing through Diomaye? For a man holding the supreme office of the Republic, that question is corrosive. At some point, the only way to answer it was to remove the man who made it possible to ask. Greene would say: the benefactor should have seen it coming. The psychologist would say something more interesting: both men were trapped in a dynamic older than either of them.<h2> </h2><h2>The Psychology of the Wound</h2> Why does betrayal by an intimate hurt more than aggression by a stranger? The psychologist Jennifer Freyd built an entire research program — betrayal trauma theory — around a simple observation: the damage of a betrayal is proportional not to the act itself, but to the degree of dependence and trust invested in the relationship. A stranger who cheats you costs you money. A brother who cheats you costs you your map of the world. The injury is epistemic before it is material: if he could do this, then everything I believed about how to read people was wrong. This is why political ruptures between former brothers-in-arms generate an emotional intensity that ordinary opposition politics never does. Macky Sall versus Abdoulaye Wade. Idrissa Seck versus Wade before him. And now Faye versus Sonko. Senegal has seen this film before — the mentor and the protégé, the president and the man who made him — and each time, the public reaction exceeds the political stakes, because the public is not only watching politics. It is watching a betrayal archetype, and every viewer maps it onto their own life: the business partner, the cousin, the best friend from the daara or the lycée. Three psychological mechanisms, well documented in the research literature, explain why closeness manufactures its own dangers. The debt that becomes resentment. Social psychologists have long observed that gratitude has a half-life. In the first phase, a major favor produces genuine warmth. In the second, it produces obligation. In the third — if the debt is unpayable and publicly known — it produces a quiet hostility toward the creditor, because his very existence is a reminder of one's insufficiency. Dostoevsky understood this before psychology had a name for it; so does every Senegalese family that has watched a relative grow cold toward the uncle who paid for his studies. The beneficiary does not forgive the benefactor for having needed him. The power paradox. The psychologist Dacher Keltner spent two decades studying what power does to the people who acquire it, and his conclusion is sobering: the empathic and cooperative skills that help people rise to power are precisely the capacities that power then erodes. Elevated individuals become measurably worse at reading others, more convinced of their own judgment, more likely to interpret loyalty as obligation owed to them rather than a gift to be maintained. This is not a moral failing unique to bad men. It is a predictable transformation, and it operates on presidents and on newly promoted middle managers alike. The friend you helped install is not, two years later, the same psychological person you installed. The office has been rewriting him daily. Self-justification and the divergence of stories. When a close relationship fractures, both parties almost immediately begin constructing incompatible narratives — not out of cynicism, but because cognitive dissonance demands it. Nobody can live inside the sentence "I betrayed the man who made me." So the mind edits: he was overstepping; he never let me govern; I had institutional duties larger than personal loyalty. And on the other side: I gave him everything; he was nothing without me; he was captured by the old system. Listen to the dueling accounts of the May rupture — the Palace's language of institutional necessity, Sonko's account of a "compagnonnage" terminated in a Palace meeting — and you hear two self-justification machines running at full capacity. Both men are likely sincere. That is what makes the mechanism so dangerous: betrayal rarely feels like betrayal from the inside.<h2> </h2><h2>The Cultural Layer: Why This Wound Cuts Deeper Here</h2> There is a reason this rupture has shaken Senegalese society beyond its political consequences, and it has to do with the architecture of trust in our culture. Senegalese social life is built on dense, long-term bonds of obligation: the family, the mbokk, the religious tie between taalibe and guide, the loyalty networks of neighborhood and region. In such a society, trust is not a private transaction between two individuals; it is a public structure, witnessed by the community, sanctified by religion, reinforced by proverb. To designate a man — to say publicly Diomaye moy Sonko — is to perform an act closer to adoption than to endorsement. This is the culture's great strength: it produces solidarity that more atomized societies envy. But it carries a specific vulnerability. Where trust is sacralized, its violation is not merely a breach of contract — it is a kind of sacrilege, and the social scripts for managing it are thin. Wolof wisdom is full of warnings about exactly this. The elders did not say "trust no one"; they said something subtler — that the person who can truly wound you is, by definition, someone you have let inside. The stranger has no access to your back. The diaspora knows this terrain intimately, often more painfully than anyone. Ask anyone in Paris, Montreal, or New York who has sent money home for years, financed a sibling's business, bought land through a trusted relative — and discovered, on a visit, that the house was never built, the land was sold twice, the business existed only in phone calls. The betrayals that devastate diaspora families are almost never committed by strangers. They are committed by the people we trusted because checking on them felt like an insult to the relationship. A life organized around the prevention of betrayal is itself a form of loss — you pre-pay the cost of treason every single day, whether or not it ever arrives. Paranoia is just betrayal on a subscription plan. The mature reading is different, and it can be stated in one sentence: trust is not a feeling to be given; it is a structure to be built. What does that mean in practice? It means understanding that trust has components, and they are separable. You can trust someone's affection completely while remaining lucid about their incentives. Sonko could trust Diomaye's gratitude and still recognize that the presidency would, sooner or later, generate interests opposed to his own. Loving someone and predicting them are two different competencies, and confusing them is the root error. The wisest people I know are warm in their attachments and cold in their forecasts. It means never building an arrangement whose safety depends entirely on one person's permanent goodwill. This is the engineering principle hiding inside Greene's law. The question is not "do I trust him?" but "what happens to me if I'm wrong?" A partnership with clear written terms, a property held in your own name, a business where you can see the accounts — these are not insults to friendship. They are what allows friendship to survive contact with money and power. The contract does not replace trust; it protects the relationship from the situations that destroy trust. In Senegalese culture, where asking for paper can feel like an accusation, this requires courage — but consider the alternative: how many brotherhoods have been annihilated precisely because everything rested on parole? It means watching trajectories, not snapshots. The friend of today is not a fixed object; he is a person moving through circumstances that will change him. The power paradox is not optional. If your friend is rising — into wealth, office, or status — assume that the rise itself will alter the relationship, and renegotiate it consciously rather than waking up one day to discover it changed without you. Diomaye Faye in April 2024 and Diomaye Faye in May 2026 are, in a meaningful psychological sense, two different men. The error was treating the first man's loyalty as a property of the second. And it means, finally, refusing the totalizing gift. This cuts both ways. Be careful of owing someone everything — unpayable debts deform the debtor. And be equally careful of being owed everything, because the person who owes you his entire existence will one day need to destroy the debt to breathe. The healthiest bonds are those in which the ledger flows in both directions and never grows too heavy on either side. Senegalese wisdom encoded this long ago in the rhythms of reciprocity — the gift that circulates rather than the gift that crushes. <h2>The People Watched</h2> In the end, the rupture of May 2026 is not a story about a traitor and a victim. It is a story about two men caught in forces — psychological, structural, cultural — that have been breaking partnerships since long before the Republic of Senegal existed. The benefactor's gift was too large to be carried. The beneficiary's office was built to dissolve dependence. The culture sacralized a bond that politics was always going to test. Each man, from inside his own narrative, is the loyal one. The 48 Laws of Power offers the cold version of the lesson. But the version worth keeping is warmer and harder at the same time: trust generously, structure carefully, predict honestly, and never confuse the person you love with the situation he is about to enter. The Senegalese people watched two brothers become president and prime minister, and then watched a decree do what prison, persecution, and Macky Sall's entire state apparatus never managed: separate them. The people will draw their own conclusions at the ballot box in 2029. The rest of us should draw ours at the kitchen table, in the business we are about to start with a cousin, in the land we are about to buy through a friend, in every relationship where love and interest are about to share a roof. The elders knew. Greene systematized. Dakar, this May, demonstrated. Never put too much trust in friends — not because friendship is false, but because trust, like any precious structure, must be built to survive the weather.

Keeping one's promise means maintaining oneself where the temptation would be to evade. Diomaye has evaded. Not in the face of his adversaries, but in the face of himself.
The Workers of Oblivion: There are figures that sum up an era. 130 against zero is one of them. One hundred and thirty Pastef deputies out of one hundred and sixty-five, an overwhelming, historic parliamentary majority, unprecedented in the modern political history of Senegal. And yet zero ministers from that same movement in the government just formed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Zero. The number does not lie. It does not plead. It states with the implacable coldness of facts that need no comment to be scandalous.
Political scientists will see a tactical reshuffle. Activists will see a betrayal. Paul Ricœur, for his part, would read something even more serious: a man at odds with himself. <h2>The Conflict of Interpretations</h2> Any complex political situation—and the one we are experiencing is such—carries within it several simultaneously legitimate readings. This is one of the fundamental teachings of hermeneutic philosophy, which makes it an irreplaceable tool in the face of power ruptures. First reading, that of the demos. One hundred and thirty deputies out of one hundred and sixty-five. The Senegalese people have spoken with rare, almost intimidating clarity. They have entrusted Pastef with a parliamentary majority that, in any living democracy, normally translates into government presence. It is the elementary grammar of representation, which ensures that universal suffrage is not a ceremony but a foundational act whose consequences bind everyone, including the one who presides over the destiny of the Nation. Not taking this into account means governing above the people. It means turning the election into folklore. Second reading, that of the kratos. The President of the Republic, within the Senegalese constitutional framework, has a sovereign prerogative: to appoint the Prime Minister and form the government. This prerogative is not granted to him by Pastef; it is conferred by the Constitution, in the name of another legitimacy, also derived from universal suffrage. Diomaye Faye was elected President of the Republic, and he acts as such. He can argue, not without some appearance of right, that he embodies a national will that transcends the boundaries of a party, even if it is the parliamentary majority. Both readings are real. Both readings are defensible. And it is precisely their coexistence that produces the tension we observe—not a simple political quarrel, but a conflict of legitimacies, in the full philosophical sense of the term. This type of conflict is not resolved by force; it is overcome by interpretation. By the ability to hold both readings together without crushing one in favor of the other. Yet that is exactly what Diomaye Faye did not do. He did not seek synthesis. He chose to ignore the first reading in favor of the second. And in doing so, he opened a wound that the Constitution alone cannot heal. <h2>The Narrative Perjury: When a Man Breaks with Himself</h2> In Oneself as Another, Ricœur makes a distinction that illuminates our situation with almost surgical precision. He distinguishes two fundamental forms of personal identity, and by extension, political identity. First, the idem—what a man is in a stable, permanent, substantial way. The substance of what he has been, the sum of what has built him. For Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the idem is inseparable from Pastef. He is its product—political, activist, existential. It is Pastef that carried him, defended him when he was in prison, made him a candidate and then a president. His political identity does not belong to him alone. It results from a collective construction, hard-won through shared sacrifices. Then the ipse—what a man is in the promise, in the commitment kept over time. The ability to remain faithful to what one has promised to be, even when circumstances change, even when power transforms, even when the temptation to redefine oneself becomes irresistible. This is what the philosopher calls self-constancy, the highest and most demanding form of identity. So what happened the day Diomaye Faye formed a government without any member of Pastef? He simultaneously broke with his idem and his ipse. With his idem, by erasing from the executive the movement that made him. By governing as if Pastef were merely an electoral vehicle, now useless, one gets off once the destination is reached. With his ipse, by betraying the narrative promise of what he was supposed to embody. For he had not only promised public policies; he had promised a rupture, a refoundation, a collective project carried by a movement. That promise was inscribed in the imagination of millions of Senegalese who voted for Pastef believing they were voting for themselves. This is narrative perjury—not the ordinary lie of a politician reneging on programmatic commitments. But the rupture of a man with the character he had pledged to be. The dissolution of the self in the very exercise of power meant to fulfill that self. Keeping one's promise means maintaining oneself where the temptation would be to evade. Diomaye Faye has evaded. Not in the face of his adversaries, but in the face of himself. And that is infinitely more serious. <h2>The Workers of Oblivion: Memory Manipulated as a Political Project</h2> We must distinguish natural forgetting—the kind that inevitably occurs in the ordinary course of time—from manipulated forgetting, the kind that is organized, instrumentalized, and elevated into policy. This second forgetting is not a failure of memory. It is a violence done to it. The government that President Diomaye Faye has just formed is, in this sense, an enterprise of organized forgetting. Not only because it excludes Pastef—the movement that made the alternation possible—but because it welcomes into its ranks a singular cohort of men and women well known in Senegal's recent political history. Those who yesterday fought what they serve today. Those whose conviction lasted exactly as long as their exclusion from power. Those who have made their own renunciation a calling card, and their selective amnesia a qualification. The Workers of Oblivion: For this is precisely their function in the apparatus we observe. Each defector integrated into the government is a chapter torn from the book of collective memory, a way of telling the Senegalese people that what they lived through, what they fought against, what some of their own suffered and died for, can be erased, revised, turned inside out like a garment. Manipulated forgetting is always at the service of a substitute narrative. One does not erase for the pleasure of erasing; one erases in order to rewrite. The question that then imposes itself is this: what narrative is Diomaye Faye writing in place of the one the people entrusted to him? A narrative where the victors of the alternation no longer have a place in the exercise of the power they conquered. A narrative where those who lived through the years of resistance—imprisonments, humiliations, bereavements—are thanked by their own erasure. A narrative where the defector is worth more than the activist, because the defector does not burden power with his memory. This is wounded memory in all its brutality—not the memory that naturally suffers from the passage of time, but the one deliberately wounded, out of calculation, convenience, or fear of what it recalls. And a wounded memory does not disappear. It transforms. It becomes a demand, then anger, then political force. The history of peoples is full of wounded memories that eventually returned, often with a violence proportional to the intensity of the forgetting imposed on them. Pastef, its activists, its martyrs, its one hundred and thirty deputies have a memory. And that memory has just been wounded. <h2>The Open Question: What Becomes of a Power That Governs Against Its Own History?</h2> Great philosophy does not like definitive conclusions. It distrusts thinkers who close what they have opened, who offer certainty where the human condition offers only vertigo. It is in this spirit that we conclude. Not to absolve. Not to condemn. But to ask, with all the gravity the situation demands, the question that Ricœur himself would have asked. What becomes of a politician who breaks with the narrative of what he was? What becomes of a power that cuts itself off from the memory that gave it birth, that governs without those who made government possible, that recruits its workers from among those who fought what it is supposed to embody? Narrative identity is not an acquisition; it is a permanent conquest, fragile, threatened from within as much as from without. A man, a movement, a Nation remain themselves only on condition of holding the thread of their own history, of not letting it go under the pressure of power, convenience, or the temptation to reinvent themselves without memory. Bassirou Diomaye Faye has let go of that thread. Today he governs in a strange space—that of a power formally legitimate and narratively orphaned. Legitimate because constitutional. Orphaned because cut off from the history that gave it meaning beyond the mere management of state affairs. And facing him, in the National Assembly, with his one hundred and thirty deputies, his voice, his intact memory, and his overwhelming popular legitimacy, Ousmane Sonko waits. Not as an ordinary adversary. But as the guardian of the original narrative. As the one who can say, at any moment, we were there before, we will be there after. In Greek tragedy, he who forgets where he comes from always ends up returning there, but in pain. The question therefore remains entirely open: how far can one govern against oneself before no longer recognizing oneself? The answer belongs to history. It belongs to the Senegalese people. It belongs, perhaps, to Bassirou Diomaye Faye himself, if he still has the time, and the courage, to reread himself.

When Power Erases the Memory of Its Own Birth (Sonko vs. Diomaye)

In 1994, the World Bank made history by creating the Inspection Panel, the first independent accountability mechanism at any international organization. A breakthrough for communities in the Global South, who could finally denounce destructive projects without relying on diplomatic channels. Thirty years later, of the 186 complaints filed, 52 come from Africa — from Senegal to Kenya, Ghana to Zambia. These complaints tell an unvarnished story: botched consultations, ignored environmental assessments, forced displacements. Human tragedies that the Bank’s own policies were meant to prevent.

Today, the World Bank wants to become 'bigger and better.' Under the banner 'One WBG,' it pushes for greater collaboration among its five institutions. But this merger of accountability mechanisms — the Inspection Panel, the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, and the dispute resolution body — raises a crucial question for Africa: who will protect communities when projects become more complex and responsibilities more blurred? For while integration promises efficiency, it also risks diluting the independence of recourse bodies.

A task force report commissioned in September 2025 outlines several scenarios. It acknowledges the exercise is 'feasible but complex.' The three current mechanisms have different cultures, policies, and practices. Merging them carelessly could create a bureaucratic monster less accessible to complainants — often peasants, fishermen, illiterate women who speak neither English nor French.

The academics who helped create the Inspection Panel propose a solution: two distinct mechanisms, one for compliance reviews, the other for dispute resolution. The first would be chaired by a three-member panel appointed by the Board, with a permanent chair serving six years. The second would be headed by an experienced dispute resolution professional at the vice-president level, reporting directly to the Bank’s president. This architecture would ensure each function retains its expertise and independence.

But beyond structures, political will is what matters. Precedents are not reassuring: in India, the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman found the Bank non-compliant in financing a coal-fired power plant — and its recommendations were ignored. In Uganda, a road project exposed women and children to serious risks, and the Inspection Panel had to fight for redress. If the Bank truly wants to be 'better,' it must ensure that African complaints do not remain dead letters.

Africa, which receives the largest share of World Bank financing, has everything to gain — or lose — from this reform. Senegalese communities, who have seen farmland sacrificed for tourism or mining infrastructure, know that the devil lies in the details of safeguard policies. If the new integrated mechanism is not stronger, faster, and more accessible, it will be nothing but a fig leaf.

The world is watching. From Senegal to the world, our culture teaches us to demand accountability. The World Bank must hear this demand.

A Half-Century of African Complaints: What Next for the World Bank’s Accountability?

Imagine handing your savings to a neighbor, who lends them to someone else, who then sells them back to you at a usurious rate. This is precisely what Africa does with its foreign reserves. Our central banks, sovereign wealth funds, and pension funds park colossal sums — nearly $530 billion in reserves alone — in foreign “safe” assets like US Treasuries, earning an average of 3.5% annually. Meanwhile, the same Western institutions reinvest that money in Africa through Eurobonds, at rates between 9% and 15%. The result is a silent wealth transfer from South to North, a quiet hemorrhage that starves the continent of the resources it needs for development.

This mechanism is no accident. It is hardwired into the rules imposed by the IMF, the World Bank, and the credit rating agencies. To be considered “investment grade,” assets must be rated by Moody’s, S&amp;P, or Fitch. Most African financial instruments, by design, do not qualify. National regulators, trapped by these norms, have no choice but to export local savings. The consequence: shallow African financial markets, unable to finance industrialization, infrastructure, or job creation. The vicious circle is perfect: market weakness justifies foreign investment, which in turn keeps markets weak.

Yet solutions exist. The Afreximbank Central Bank Deposit Programme, launched in 2014, has already mobilized over $44 billion — about 9% of total reserves. Participating central banks earn between 6% and 6.5%, nearly double what European or US placements yield. And all without compromising safety. In February 2024, the African Union took a historic step by calling on member states to repatriate all their reserves. A strong declaration, non-binding but groundbreaking.

The real challenge is political. It means redefining what a “safe” asset is in Africa, developing regional rating benchmarks, and building local-currency bond markets. China, South Korea, Japan did it: they used domestic savings to finance their industrial transformation. Why not us? The continent holds an estimated $4 trillion in domestic capital — enough to cover the annual $280 billion financing gap for infrastructure and trade.

This is not a utopia. It is a matter of sovereignty and clarity. Keeping money at home means no longer financing others’ development at the expense of our own. It also means, for central banks, swapping a low yield for a productive one. Africa does not need charity; it needs its own resources to work for it. The path is clear. Now we must walk it.

What If Africa Kept Its Money at Home?

Lawyer, mathematician, professor of economics, political opponent, founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS), President of the Republic—Abdoulaye Wade has held several functions and occupied various positions on the national and international stage throughout his career. Elected president in 2000, the media quickly presented him as "the most educated head of state in Africa," given his rich and impressive background. However, his academic, political, and professional journey, which is both varied and complex, leaves a gap regarding a specific and important period of his life. There is little or no information about his experience as a student at the renowned École Normale William Ponty (ENWP), as a teacher in Thiès, as a boarding school master at Lycée Van Vollenhoven (now Lycée Lamine Guèye), and as a student at the prestigious Lycée Condorcet in Paris in 1950.

This contribution, based on interviews and archival documents, seeks to shed light on a little-known chapter in the journey of this man, whose centenary Senegal and Africa are currently commemorating.

Abdoulaye Wade was born on May 29, 1926, in Kébémer, in the former district of Louga. It is in this ancient historical province of Ndiambour (kingdom of Cayor) that the future President of the Republic of Senegal took his first steps in French education before continuing his journey in Saint-Louis and then Dakar, where he obtained his elementary school certificate. It is also worth noting that in the same province of Ndiambour, on September 5, 1935, Abdou Diouf, his predecessor as head of Senegal, was born.

"Intelligent and dedicated" to his studies, Abdoulaye Wade passed the selective federal entrance exam for the William Ponty Normal School (ENWP) in Sébikotane, known as Sébiponty. This institution was the cradle of training for a multitude of Francophone African executives, some of whom later came to power as heads of state. Among its alumni are prestigious figures such as Modibo Keita, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Hubert Maga, Hamani Diori, Émile Zinsou, and himself, Abdoulaye Wade. It was in this temple of knowledge that the young student Abdoulaye Wade enrolled in the primary education section. His classmates included Senegalese Mamadou Diop, Dahomean Gouton Albert Adande, Sudanese Mory Sidibé, Mauritanian Moctar Tidiane Bâ, Guinean Birama Cissokho, and Ivorians Wadjou Koffi, Guangou René Effi, and Mori Touré. During his training at Ponty, he became enthusiastic about his general psychology courses. They would later prompt him to enroll in the General Psychology Certificate when he became a student in Besançon. Motivated and ambitious, Abdoulaye Wade passed his final exam at ENWP with the grade of "Fairly Good."

Now a supernumerary teacher in the common framework of primary education in French West Africa (AOF), the normal school graduate was assigned to the urban school of Thiès on October 30, 1947. At that time, most graduates of this institution were assigned to "bush posts" at the beginning of their careers. Thus, for the young Abdoulaye Wade, the assignment to Thiès was a relatively privileged position. Indeed, the city held a strategic position within the AOF due to its status as a major railway hub, facilitating exchanges and interactions among various populations of the federation.

Teaching a first-year elementary class (CE1) with a fairly large number of students (59), Abdoulaye Wade quickly caught the attention of his superiors. The Inspector of Education, Mr. Bernard, described him as a "beginning teacher who has goodwill and authority" over his students. Most teachers of his generation had a vocation to be teachers and to make a career of it, but Abdoulaye Wade dreamed of pursuing university studies and being among the best of his generation. Once settled in Thiès, the young teacher, driven by strong intellectual and professional ambitions, quickly turned his sights toward other horizons. His stay in this city was only a transitional step in his journey. Nourishing higher academic aspirations, he planned to leave Thiès to continue his training in secondary schools in Dakar, with the goal of obtaining his baccalaureate. "I wasn't assigned to Thiès to stay long; my ambition was to continue my studies," he recalls. Abdoulaye Wade seized the opportunity when a rectoral note from the Directorate of Education opened the way for teachers wishing to improve themselves to continue their studies. However, the beginnings of his teaching career were temporarily interrupted by his military service obligations. Abdoulaye Wade thus performed his military service in October 1948 before being discharged a year later as a second-class soldier assigned to the 7th Regiment of Senegalese Tirailleurs (RTS) in Ouakam (Dakar).

Abdoulaye Wade returned to teaching and was assigned as a boarding school master at Lycée Van Vollenhoven (now Lycée Lamine Guèye). During his professional stay at this institution, he was judged by the Academic Inspector, Mr. Fajadet, as "a conscientious, dedicated young man who gave full satisfaction." While fulfilling his duties as a boarding school master, the former "Pontin" worked to prepare for the first part of the baccalaureate, which he obtained in October 1949. Abdoulaye Wade is a student whose memory and work capacity logically prepare him for success. He won the mathematics and history prizes that same year, he specifies. His exam and competition results allowed him to obtain a scholarship from the City of Dakar in 1950 to continue his studies in France. It was in the winter of 1950 that the future President of the Republic and founder of the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) arrived in Paris, France.

Abdoulaye Wade, the brilliant student of Lycée Condorcet

At the end of the Second World War, the development of education took place under pressure from the newly elected African representatives sitting at the Palais Bourbon (France). France strengthened its policy of granting scholarships to African students to pursue their studies in the metropole. Nearly 2,000 African or Malagasy high school and university students benefited from scholarships in the years 1949-1950 to pursue their secondary or higher education in France. The young high school student Abdoulaye Wade was part of this cohort of Senegalese who arrived in Paris in the winter of 1950 thanks to a scholarship from the municipality of Dakar, headed by Maître Lamine Guèye. He was 24 years old at the time. He already had a solid intellectual and professional culture reinforced by his time in the army. Having lived in Saint-Louis, Dakar, and Thiès, the young scholarship holder was not really disoriented when he arrived in the French capital. He quickly familiarized himself with and adapted to the rigors of metropolitan life. The Paris of that era, still bearing the scars of the German occupation, was also the privileged place for the intellectual training and politicization of colonial African elites, such as Léopold Sédar Senghor and Mamadou Dia. Abdoulaye Wade was preceded there by his elders like Cheikh Anta Diop.

He did not stay long enough to experience and participate in the political and intellectual ferment. Upon arriving in the French capital for his studies, Abdoulaye Wade intended "to become an engineer." "It was by chance that I went to high school," he says, where he finally enrolled on February 28, 1950, at Lycée Condorcet, named after the French philosopher and mathematician Nicolas Condorcet. Founded in 1803, this high school was renowned for the excellence of its education. It welcomed the brightest students from the French capital. The writer Marcel Proust, the socialist Jean Jaurès, and the philosopher Henri Bergson also completed their humanities studies there, as stated on the school's website. It was in this excellent high school, located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, that Abdoulaye Wade put his intelligence and talents to the test against other brilliant minds. It did not take long for him to distinguish himself with his mathematics teacher. "I had already passed the first part of the baccalaureate and now I had to pass the second," he recalls. At Lycée Condorcet, the student Abdoulaye Wade demonstrated promising abilities in general mathematics to his teacher, who was captivated by his answers to questions posed to the class. He remembers that after his first general mathematics class, he immediately bought, despite his modest scholarship, a mathematics book to deepen his knowledge and adapt to the high academic demands of this prestigious institution.

Thanks to his dedication, he passed the second part of the mathematics baccalaureate in June of the same year. Obtaining this diploma opened the doors to higher education. To begin his student career, Abdoulaye Wade then chose to leave the French capital to settle in Besançon, which would become his adopted city for many years. The 1950s marked the beginning of his university education and his union and political engagement for the liberation of Senegal and Africa. This new page of history took him from the blackboard to the political and union arena.

From Blackboard to Political Arena: The Lesser-Known Journey of Abdoulaye Wade

This, perhaps, is the true curse of political parricide: the father dies institutionally, but rises again symbolically. And the son who thought he was freeing himself finds himself, for the first time, truly alone. From Parricide Foretold to Its Accomplishment — Reflections on the Faye–Sonko RuptureOn May 22, 2026, a presidential decree ended the duties of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. For anyone who had read the signs, the act came as no surprise. It was the logical culmination of a dynamic that some — including the author of these lines — had tried to name in these very columns: institutional parricide. This text is its sequel — not an indictment, but a political autopsy. <h2>From Metaphor to Act: The Parricide Accomplished</h2> A few months ago, I wrote in these same columns that the Faye–Sonko relationship carried within it the seeds of an institutional parricide. I used the word then with the caution of the metaphor-maker — one who names a structure without prejudging its outcome. That outcome has now arrived, and it calls for a rereading.Parricide, in the political sense that Freud gave it in Totem and Taboo, is not an act of hatred. It is an act of foundation. The son kills the father not to destroy him, but to take his place — to become, in his turn, the group's center of gravity. What makes the Senegalese case singular is that the institutional son — Diomaye Faye, raised politically by Sonko, freed from prison by the popular pressure Sonko had generated, elected thanks to Sonko's charisma — sought to emancipate himself from a father still living, still present, still heard.And yet, parricide is legitimate, in Freudian logic as in political logic, only when the father has exhausted his legitimacy. Here, the father was not exhausted. He was cumbersome.
